Introducing Young Learners to Coding with Cubetto

Shore’s youngest learners are exploring the world of technology without screens through an innovative, creative, and hands-on experience called Cubetto. Cubetto is a screen-free coding playset that introduces Pre-K students to early programming skills in the most developmentally appropriate way, through play. The Cubetto Playset has the word “play” in its name to indicate that it is first and foremost a play-based method of bringing technology to children as young as three years old. Using a child-sized control board, coding blocks, and large floor maps, children guide their Cubetto robot through various terrains. Along the way, they learn about sequencing, problem solving, and algorithm design, all while working together in small groups and having a blast!

Part of what makes Cubetto so special at Shore is its perfect fit with our Reggio Emilia-inspired approach in the classroom — it encourages curiosity, hands-on discovery, and collaborative learning. Children are invited to imagine, explore, and create as they design maps and navigate challenges, practice math and sequencing concepts, strengthen early literacy skills, and connect learning to real-world environments. You’ll also see Cubetto in action during SEA Shore Enrichment and Summer Shore programming, where it continues to spark imagination and build foundational coding skills in a joyful, engaging way.

“Young children LOVE Cubetto! There's nothing more exciting than watching their tiny wooden robots move all around the floor maps based on a program or algorithm that they personally designed. Cubetto Robots are a completely play-based way of bringing coding to young children without the use of screen time. Children program their robot to travel all over a big city, a desert, the ocean, and outer space,” said Shore Pre-K 2 Teacher Beth White of the program.

We love seeing our students light up with confidence while using tools like Cubetto that make learning both meaningful and fun. Stay tuned for more playful adventures in learning!
