The CreativeProcess

The bright, spacious studios in the Center for Creativity are a beehive of activity, with students immersed in all sorts of projects, making clay pots and sculptures, painting, drawing, exploring digital art, and more. Students work on developmentally appropriate projects, continually building upon their arts experience from the prior year, deepening and honing their skills. To foster respect for differences and expand cultural literacy, students also learn about a wide range of artists who stem from diverse backgrounds across history and all corners of the world.

RUTH BAUER, ARTS DEPARTMENT CHAIR

Students love coming to the art room—even during recess—to draw or dabble with different materials. I love these informal opportunities to nurture a young artist who is discovering their creative voice!
The Lower School art curriculum provides a broad foundation for the Grade 6 art course, and seventh graders explore more challenging techniques such as using the pottery wheel and carving block prints. In the eighth grade, students have the opportunity to choose their arts courses from elective classes such as Digital Darkroom, Create with Clay, and 2D Studio. Grade 9 Studio Art is a secondary school-level foundation course in two- and three-dimensional media. In the Upper School, students also have the option of pursuing an independent study in a media of their choice, and over the years their projects have run the gamut of oil painting, book-making, animation, fashion design, sewing, comics, and ceramics.
