Lower School Music

Our Lower School Music Room houses over twenty xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels, seven Zimbabwean marimbas, sixteen djembes, soprano ukuleles, hand chimes, and various percussion instruments. Students begin exploring music with their voices and these instruments beginning in Pre-K.

Lower School students visit the music classroom twice each week. On any given day, passersby will see students singing, playing instruments, composing, improvising, listening and responding to music, and collaborating with one another.

Alex Asacker, Lower School Music Teacher

Above everything else, I want children to enjoy music, to find joy in rhythm, singing, and movement. In terms of pedagogy, I like the approach of John Feierabend, who talks about children becoming 'tuneful, beatful, and artful.'
