Fall 2024 - Sports Recap

By: Nancy McNall, Athletic Director

The fall season at Shore was filled with positive energy, dedicated athletes, and a spirit of community. With fields in excellent condition, talented students, and plenty of sunny afternoons, the season was a memorable one. During the Fall Celebration, upper school students, coaches, parents, teachers, and administrators came together to honor the hard work and achievements of Shore’s athletes and coaches as the first season of the year came to a close.

This fall, Shore proudly fielded five teams across various sports, and the team captains shared their reflections on the season, highlighting their collective accomplishments. Their stories of growth, teamwork, and sportsmanship are a testament to the commitment of our student-athletes. Some of the season’s standout moments include:

Girls Varsity Soccer compiled six wins and five losses in a team led by a talented group of 8th graders and Coaches Doug Lucey, Em Dickson, and Gwen Sneeden. Captain Stella C shared “At the start of the season we were working on building from the back up to our forwards. It took us some time to apply these skills in game situations, but everyone pushed themselves and made progress that improved the team.” Captain, Ellie B shared this highlight, “Our team worked hard this whole season, so we planned to do a mini tournament in our Halloween costumes. It was a fun way to celebrate our hard work and bond as a team before our last few weeks together.”

Boys Varsity Soccer enjoyed their season together with coaches Andy Boger and Cam McNall. The team earned three victories and a few excruciatingly close losses. “We are all proud of the work that our team put into the games and practices. This has made us all better and more of a team.” said Captain Sam C. After a close game with Fay, Gavin Knox shared, “Although we didn’t end up winning the game, it easily showed how our team had grown over the course of the season. We learned to distribute the ball to every player, and have a good time.”

Boys JV Soccer had their strongest season in recent years. Under the guidance of Coaches Kevin Murphy and Amanda Berg, the team exuded impressive positivity and humor! At the Fall Celebration, Captain Jack Foster explained, “The best game we played this season was against Waring. We tied 3-3 and on the other team there were tenth graders who were 2 feet taller than most people on our team but 4 feet taller than me.” Will P added, “Overall, we had a really great season.  A highlight during the season was that we had a winning record this year!!

A tiny but mighty team, Varsity Field Hockey, finished the season with a three-game winning streak to close with a record of 4-3-3. “From trying new positions, new skills, and new lineups, by the end of the season, we all became comfortable and confident working together on the field and bonding to become our best version of a team,” said Captain Posey B.
Fellow Captain Anne O mentioned “As the season progressed, our ability to play as a team became very effective and we played very well in our games. I can’t express enough how proud I am of the team this season, we came such a long way and we had fun.”

Cross Country had a robust sign-up with a large contingent of 8th-grade runners. Captain Arden S said, “One of the best parts about our season is how well we bonded as a team.” Will R added ”One of the team's highlights this season was having nine runners compete at the state cross country meet.” Four runners placed in the top one hundred for their group at this meet, and three runners had a PR on the course. Under Coaches Sarah Sklarsky and Evan Wallace, Shore Cross Country is in good hands!

Each team had their own unique journey, full of growth, fun, and camaraderie. As we wrap up this fall season, we want to give a special shout-out to Shore's 8th graders. This marks the end of their final fall season at Shore, and we are proud to acknowledge their incredible commitment over the past three seasons in the upper school. They stepped up as leaders, role models, and the anchors of our fall programs, setting a high standard for the teams. We are excited to see what the next two seasons will bring!
