Setting the Scene: Shore’s Set Crew

This winter, Shore’s set crew has been hard at work creating all sorts of props, structures, and backdrops for our upcoming musical, HONK! With the guidance of Sam Hamlin and his many years of experience in the classroom, in the theater, and as a volunteer, as well a helping hand from Theater Technical Director Maddie Dustin, these Upper School students have been galvanized to challenge themselves both creatively and physically. As they operate a variety of complex machinery in the ILab, students are pushed to use the available technology to think outside the box and develop solutions to multi-layered problems in a hands-on and fast-paced environment. This year in particular, the students have exceeded every expectation, simultaneously tapping into their creative minds and putting in the elbow grease required to craft the intricately detailed set pieces out of a collection of assorted materials such as lumber, styrofoam, and two-by-fours.

Throughout the lengthy process that is the farm-to-table creation of these set pieces, students are trusted with breaking down complex architectural designs that require the use of a myriad of tools. The hot knife, a tool used for cutting materials, has played a particularly significant role in the processes, but the students have also used drills, chop saws, and jigsaws, among others. Many of the set crew have friends performing in the musical, so seeing their hard work supporting their friends literally and figuratively as they put on the show will be all the more meaningful.

Thanks to the efforts of these exceptional students and their instructors, Shore’s musical will once again have a robust array of materials to use in their production.
