Third Grade Welcomes Guests to ‘Egyptian Play’ Jeopardy!

This year’s edition of the third grade ‘Egyptian Play,’ a beloved tradition at Shore, was spectacular! Third grade teachers Anne Babcock and Carole Lupi, along with Teaching Assistant Weller Henderson and the entirety of Grade 3, were working overtime preparing for the event weeks ahead of time, and the fruits of their labor were on full display. Once again, former Grade 3 teacher and theater legend Sam Hamlin’s script came to life as theater guests became the audience of a clever version of ‘Jeopardy,’ in which famous Egyptologist Mark Lehner squared off against pop icon and special guest Taylor Swift and Shore’s Head of School Amber Bock. The Head of School insisted she had been doing her homework and brought along her sidekick, her pet dog, Gordie, who sported a beautiful blue Shore sweater knitted by parent Veera Farhan, for emotional support during the contest.

Throughout the game, the audience was treated to a myriad of ‘musical’ and ‘theatrical’ clues, comprised of impressive song and dance performances, re-enactments of historic moments in Egyptology, and scenes from ancient Egyptian mythology. In each one of the scenes, Grade 3 students were well-prepared, rose to the challenge, and quite literally shone in the spotlight. Highlights included Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’, Bon Jovi’s ‘It’s My Life,’ the discovery of King Tutanhkamen’s tomb, and an interesting perspective into the battle between ancient Egyptian deities Set and Osiris. The actors delivered their scenes with confidence and poise, captivating the audience with their performances and setting the stage for the ‘Jeopardy’ contestants, host Ken Jennings, and Grade 3 ‘audience members’ to take it from there with clever jokes and humorous yet consistently informative discourse.

It was a performance full of memorable moments, exceptional acting work from Grade 3, and almost constant uproarious laughter from the crowd. There’s a reason the ‘Egyptian Play’ is an annual highlight and a community favorite, and once again, third grade exceeded every possible expectation and knocked this out of the park. “Let’s have another Egyptian cheer!”
