World Celebration Day: Culture, Learning, and Connection

World Celebration Day: Culture, Learning, and Connection

At Shore, we recognize the importance of fostering cultural appreciation and broadening our students' understanding of the world around us. World Celebration Day offered our school community a special opportunity to explore international traditions, music, art, cuisine, and customs. It was a joyful way to spark curiosity and celebrate the unique identities that make up our global family. This year, there was a massive outpouring of support from our Shore community, with 18 different nationalities being represented and a wide variety of artifacts, attire, music, and exhibits on display in the gymnasium. Chef Wood and the kitchen team went all out in their lunch preparations, putting together an exciting and unique spread of cuisine that included cultural dishes made from scratch to ensure that every nation was represented.

In a world that’s increasingly interconnected, understanding and respecting different cultures is more important than ever. World Celebration Day reminds us that while we may come from many backgrounds, we are all part of one global community. Students approached the event with an open mind and were curious to learn more about each nation and try all of the exciting food. Grade 1 student Tucker P. was particularly in awe of the Greek cuisine, saying, “The food at the Greek table was my favorite! The rice was especially good and everything was delicious.”

An energetic performance from the group ‘Grooversity’ brought the good feelings of the day all together in one place, as students of all ages joined the group on stage for a wonderful performance of music and dance which brought smiles to all in attendance at the packed Trustey Family Theatre.

Shore was fortunate to have the support of parent volunteers who worked together as World Celebration Day Chairs to organize the vibrant event. “What started as a small idea has grown into something truly special - an event that brings our community together and opens our children’s eyes to the beauty and richness of the world beyond just their own. Being able to bring it to life with my friend, Sara Tollerud, has been one of my most meaningful experiences as a Shore parent,” said Veera Farhan P’28, ’31. Sara Tollerud P’29, ’34 also weighed in on her experience, saying, “Beyond a fun and educational day for the kids, World Celebration Day is truly a collaboration between the adults in our community. Faculty, staff, and parents come together to celebrate what makes our families unique - often finding similar lived experiences. When the idea was first presented to the SFA and Shore, everyone was excited and willing to make it work. We never heard 'no', only 'let's figure this out.' To me, that's important - and one of the defining qualities that makes Shore special. I am also so grateful that this experience introduced me to so many amazing parents, including my friend Veera Farhan who has championed this event since the very beginning and whose dedication and partnership was instrumental in launching this event.” The efforts of our parent volunteers are truly invaluable in ensuring a great experience for our entire community, and this year was especially memorable.
