First Grade Students Clean Up Campus

"One day, I saw some garbage on the ground, and I thought, 'That is so going into the trash!'"

That's how first grader Maia described the genesis of an idea for cleaning up Shore's playround and fields with the help of a dedicated group of fellow first graders.

"James saw me throwing away the garbage, and he wanted to help, too. Then I said to James, 'Wouldn't it be a great idea to clean up more trash around campus?'"

According to first grade teacher Mary Kinahan, "On their own, Maia and James decided to clean up the playground to help protect our environment. Soon after, almost the entire class was bringing in grabbers, bags, and vinyl gloves to help clean up."

As many of their friends and fellow students played during recess, the students worked daily for almost two weeks to collect and dispose of a plethora of food wrappers, bottles and cans, paper, and less readily identifiable refuse they discovered on and around the playground, on the playing fields, and near the back fence of Shore's campus.

By the end of the two weeks of work, related Kinahan, "they had almost run out of garbage to pick up. It was an amazing effort."
