Acapalooza 2016 Continues Long Singing Tradition

Despite a two-month postponement caused by inclement winter weather, Acapalooza 2016 still drew a sold-out house for this twelve-year-old Shore tradition.

Held on April 14 in Shore's Theatre, the most recent staging of this invitational celebration of a cappella welcomed groups from Medford and Hamilton-Wenham high schools, Pingree School, and Harvard University. As always, Shore's own Acafellas and Puellae Cantantes led off the evening of song.

Performing at this year's Acapalooza alongside Shore a cappella groups were the Dell Belles of Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School, Los Rubios of Medford High School, Pingree's Spectrum Highlights, and headliners the Harvard Opportunes, of Harvard University. The show's closer and annual highlight is a joyous singalong led by the college headliners, who invite all the other singers onto the stage. This year, the Harvard Opportunes led the Acafellas, Puellae Cantantes, and visiting groups in their version of Jefferson Starship's "We Built This City."

Nearly all of the invited groups this year included one or more Shore alumni: Lily Wainwright '16 and Grace MacCurrach '15 in the Dell Belles, Georgia Bowder-Newton '14 in Los Rubios, and Jessica Lee '13 in the Spectrum Highlights. The continued presence of Shore alumni in the region's a cappella groups is surely a testament to the strength of the school's program.

"Shore's a cappella music program has grown tremendously during the past two decades," according to math instructor and Acapalooza emcee Kent Vienot, "and Acapalooza has grown into a wonderful showcase for talent both from Shore and from regional high schools and colleges."

A cappella first took hold at Shore some 20 years ago, when the Acafellas and Puellae Cantantes were born under the guidance of former music teachers Mike Salvatore and Peggy Lao, former fourth grade teacher Yungjin Oh, and current third grade teacher Sam Hamlin.

The Acapalooza celebration was first imagined by Oh, who over the years helped to bring groups from Tufts, Northeastern, and many independent and pulic high schools to Shore. Oh, who was known for his love of singing, also was passionate about diversity initiatives at Shore. Today, proceeds from Oh's concert creation directly benefit those initiatives.
