Welcome Sara Knox, Shore's New Lower School Head

Sara Knox joins Shore as the new Head of the Lower School this summer for the fall of 2015. She is the “Gold Standard” at Francis Parker, a distinguished, leading independent school in San Diego. Sara brings a wealth of experience in her Lower School roles as teacher, Literacy Specialist, and Lower School Admissions Director. We cannot wait to meet her in person!

While we await her arrival in July, here are a few fun facts from a recent phone interview (we will be writing more about Mrs. Knox in Shore’s fall Bulletin, too).

Q: What do you most look forward to as you return to your home state of Massachusetts?
A: More than anything, I look forward to holiday time with my family. I cannot wait to return to the cycle of the seasons and the significance of changing leaves, the first snow, or crocuses announcing the spring. I also can’t wait to get back to all the Boston sports teams. It has been hard to wear my Red Sox gear in California!

Q: What do you most look forward to discovering about Shore?
A: I am excited to get to know the families: parents, students, and faculty, too. I want to become more familiar with the Center for Creativity and the I-Lab. In California, our I-Lab program is still at the idea stage, but Shore’s I-Lab is already working! I am also really excited to help launch the new “House” system that will mix students of all ages, not just two grades. I am especially happy Shore wants to start this because we have had a wonderful experience with a similar system in my present school.

Q: Do you have favorite pastimes or hobbies?
A: First, I love to spend time with my family. I have a husband and two sons, and lots of relatives because both my husband and I are from very large families. We don’t have any family pets, but each of my sons has a fish tank. Right now we are trying to figure out how the fish can travel safely from California to Massachusetts. I also love to exercise; I especially enjoy running, yoga, and hiking. I play the piano, and when I have time, I like to cook.

Q: Speaking of food, do you have any favorite kinds?
A: I am a very big fan of vegetables, and my favorite three all begin with the letter “A:” Artichokes, asparagus, and avocados. Overall, my favorite type of food is Mexican, and I know I will miss California’s cuisine. Ice cream is a favorite dessert, of course, and one of my favorite flavors is mint chocolate chip.

Q: What are some of your favorite books?
A: When I was a child, my two favorites were The Phantom Tollbooth and The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles. My favorite children’s book now that I am grown up is Tal, and my favorite author is Kevin Henkes. My favorite adult book is The Great Gatsby.

Q: Did you have a favorite subject when you were a young student?
A: My favorite subject changed almost every year when I was in elementary school. Sometimes it was reading, sometimes it was math, but one constant favorite was writing. I still love to write today!
