Grandfriends Visiting Day a Delight for All

This year’s edition of Grandfriends Visiting Day, an annual Shore favorite, was a heartwarming way to kick off the holidays. All across campus, hallways echoed with laughter, joy, and conversations as students had the unique, heartfelt experience of sharing a slice of their day-to-day life with their grandparents and special friends.

In the Trustey Family Theatre, a warm and friendly reception and assembly led by Head of School Amber Bock and Chief Advancement Officer Katie Kozin welcomed guests, gave the community an opportunity to come together, and set the stage for a fantastic musical performance. The ensuing demonstration, which comprised a wonderful variety of vocals, percussion, and strings, was beautifully orchestrated by Lower School Music Teacher Alexandra Asacker, who once again empowered Shore students to showcase in intricate detail the plethora of musical talent and passion for their craft which they possess.

Later, in Art Teacher Riley Lucey’s classroom, students and their grandparents and special friends practiced a technique called ‘blind contour,’ where the group drew caricatures of one another without looking at the paper, with hilarious results. In Carole Lupi’s Grade 3 classroom, the room was abuzz with discussions of Egyptian artifacts. In the ILab, grandparents and special friends eagerly looked on as students’ robotics creations zoomed around a maze constructed specifically to challenge their critical thinking and programming acumen. Mr. McNall was available to provide hands-on troubleshooting support.

One of the happiest experiences that the holidays can bring is the interactions and connections fostered across generations. Witnessing our community’s youngest and eldest members experiencing these cherished moments hand in hand was special. A third grader taught her grandmother to play the recorder all by herself. Kindergarteners and grandfriends shared a laugh about recess. The smile on every face was timeless. For a fleeting moment, the half-century that divides these two generations didn’t feel like all that long after all.
