Shore Spotlight Series: Innovation
Shore parents and caregivers gathered on campus on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, for the first event of the Shore Spotlight Series to learn about how our students are immersed in expansive and innovative learning.
As the event began, Director of Instruction and Inclusion Andrew Lee posed the question “what do you think of when you hear the word ‘innovation?’” Attendees then took a few moments to write down their thoughts and reflections before breaking out into two sessions – one focused on innovation in the Upper School, and the other focused on innovation in the Lower School.
In the Upper School session with History Department Chair and Upper School History Teacher Gwen Sneeden, and Upper School Innovation Specialist Cam McNall, parents and caregivers gathered around the Harkness table. After learning about the pedagogy, they jumped into a discussion about the Bill of Rights.
Just down the hall in the Makerspace with Lower School Innovation Specialist Jill Codding, and Art Department Chair and S.A.I.L. Teacher Betsey Holland, guests learned about prey and predators using BeeBots, small codable robots.
After the breakout sessions, attendees gathered in the Library for a panel discussion. Topics discussed were about innovation at Shore, what was learned in the classrooms, and how original answers to the question “what do you think of when you hear the word ‘innovation’” may have changed. The event was a great opportunity to learn firsthand how a Shore education inspires a love of learning and encourages children to embrace academic challenge.
