World Language

The World Language Department instills a passion for languages, self-expression, and communication with others. The Department values authentic connections between human beings. By taking risks and exploring other cultures, world language students discover their own cultural identity within the larger world. Language learning is accessible to all!

US World Languages are offered as in-person courses in Latin and Spanish. In Grade 6, students choose either Latin or Spanish to study through Grade 8 or Grade 9. New students in Grades 6 have the option of enrolling in either language. New students in Grade 7 enroll in Spanish. Students entering Grade 8 or beginning their language studies after Language and Practice enroll in 8 Spanish 1A.

In Grade 9, students either continue with Latin or Spanish, or take an online course in a language that is offered online through Middlebury Interactive hosted by K12 Education. The Middlebury program is dense (160-180 hours per course), requires students to be online during their scheduled language period, and complete the activities as homework just as they would in a Shore in-person language class. An online teacher is assigned to correct speaking and writing portions of the program, and the course is asynchronous. The online teacher assigns a grade. There is an extra cost of $350 per semester of Middlebury charged by Shore. In the past, most Shore students completed one semester during a school year.

Shore students may take only one language course at Shore.
