Grade 5 Delivers Essential Supplies to Lifebridge North Shore River House Shelter

This winter, Ms. Bouchard’s Grade 5 class partnered with Lifebridge North Shore River House Shelter to deliver warm clothes, toiletries, first aid supplies, and gift cards to those in need. The shelter works with approximately three hundred people each day, and students have been hard at work collecting these items in order to help Lifebridge North Shore support those who are unable to get these materials on their own. The shelter’s needs increase in the colder months of the year as freezing cold temperatures and snow can make life for the local unhoused population even more complicated, so Grade 5’s support couldn’t have come at a better time.

The diligent work of Shore students continues to make a difference in the lives of those in need across our community, and this kind of support leaves a long-lasting impact for those who need it most. Service learning is an important piece of a Shore education, helping students develop empathy and connection while also elevating the responsibility each of us has to be kind and help one another.

Grade 5 students were impassioned about the project, and shared some quotes. “It has always made me really happy helping other people. I said I wanted to help with shelters and my mom suggested that I should turn it into a school project. Ever since then I have had a really fun time doing this!” said Stacia M. Other students also gave their thoughts. Tyler C. added “When I was little I remember that I wanted to help people and be kind… to see all the progress that we have made makes me very happy,” while Evy M. reflected that “It was very exciting when we got all of the donations, we got so many more donations this year than we got last year!”

River House is the North Shore’s first female-only shelter, providing a safe haven for vulnerable unhoused women who can face many additional challenges, including behavioral health issues, deep trauma, and domestic violence. Along with their emergency shelter housing, River House provides a number of services such as case management, support services and programming, health insurance applications, and housing application referrals. LifeBridge North Shore has worked tirelessly over the past decades to assist as many of our community members as is possible, and Shore Country Day School is proud to be a longtime partner and supporter of the cause.
