A Comedy of Comedies: This Year's Fall Play

This year’s Upper School fall play was a hit! A trimester's worth of hard work came to a climax on November 15 when this year’s cast and crew presented three short comedies to a lively and engaged audience of students, families, faculty, and staff. Students performed Family Meeting by Don Zolidis, Piglet by Brian Armstrong, and Wonder Wipes by Ken Bradbury, and each was unique and brought about laughter from the crowd in its own way.

Family Meeting was a fascinating watch, as tense build-up and family disconnect quickly turned into absurdity, shenanigans, and a father’s egregious projection of his own basketball aspirations upon his daughter. Quirkily funny in an eerily familiar way, the performance was a memorable one. Matthew C. and Isabella H. embodied their roles as the disgruntled Mom and Dad and kept the audience on their feet by staying acutely in character through various twists and turns.

Piglet was a spectacle in and of itself, as the demure family room gave way to extravagant costumes, gripping battle scenes featuring swordplay, and a Shakespearean twist with witty banter. Alden W. carried this segment from farm to table, with cleverly timed asides allowing for the young actor’s personality to bounce back and forth with the audience, not only adding depth to the character of Piglet and allowing for comedic relief but keeping the audience on track throughout a fast-moving and complex segment.

Finally, onlookers were treated to the greatest send-up of all, Ken Bradbury’s Wonder Wipes. In what was a fitting end to the show, three actors audition for the lead role in a tissue commercial, with clashing theatrical styles and all sorts of silliness giving way to a pure message encouraging the young spectators to be genuine to themselves as they challenge their own comfort zones. As the actors sobbed into the tissue and begged for autographs, the whole show came together into one, and the performance received a standing ovation from the packed crowd in the theatre.

Congratulations to this year’s cast (Matthew C., Isabella H., Alden W., Orla K., and Will M.) for their riveting performances. Thank you to Director Sarah Carlin, Technical Director Maddie Dustin, and the stage crew (Jacob B., Lileth B.) for all of your hard work.
