Shore Community Gives Back - 40 Beds Built on Giving Day for A Bed For Every Child Program

On May 1, 2024, the Shore community gave back by partnering with the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless and their A Bed for Every Child program to build 40 toddler-size beds on campus. The school-wide service-learning initiative reminded students, employees, parents, caregivers, and other friends of the power of giving together.

The event, which was held on Shore’s annual Giving Day, was an inspiring demonstration of community spirit and collaboration. Head of Upper School Oliver Hay expressed his excitement about the overwhelming participation, emphasizing how the project not only provided tangible support for families in need, but also fostered a sense of community and interconnectedness among Shore participants.

“It was incredible to see students of all ages working together alongside Shore employees and families,” said Hay. “This service project enabled students to recognize how much we can accomplish together and how we can give back and have a positive impact on our community."

Beds built through the A Bed for Every Child program are distributed among local families identified by the organization to provide beds for children lacking proper sleeping arrangements.

“Each bed represents a significant step towards improving the daily lives of these children, offering them a space of comfort and security, essential for their development and academic outcomes,” according to a statement from A Bed For Every Child Program.

Over 400 Shore community members were placed on building teams in multi-age House-based groups. Three-year-olds sat next to thirteen-year-olds, sanding wood and working carefully with the supplies and tools provided by A Bed For Every Child.

“I really liked watching people work on the bed,” said Grade 1 student Shao-Wen C.. “People who were bigger than me helped me out a lot. We built beds so whoever didn't have a bed would have a place to sleep and would be comfortable.”

“Every bed we build is more than just a piece of furniture; it's a foundation for a child's future. Thanks to the efforts of everyone at Shore Country Day School and the community, we can turn dreams into reality for 40 deserving children. Our hearts are full knowing the difference these beds will make in enhancing their quality of life and academic performance," stated A Bed For Every Child organizers.
